Lasik Laser Types

LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) has emerged as the most popular kind of eye surgery. There are various types of Lasik Laser Surgery as enumerated below:

1. Wavefront LASIK

It is also known more as custom LASIK and wavefront-guided LASIK. It is a procedure which allows modification in the procedure as per the eye structure of the patient. Doctors create a three-dimensional picture of the patient’s eye before they perform the surgery by using a wavefront analyzer which helps to reduce complications and provide more precise vision correction.

2. IntraLase LASIK

Also known as bladeless LASIK or simply IntraLASIK, it uses a laser instead of a blade to create the corneal flap. This is considered to be safer alternative to traditional LASIK as it reduces the chances of complications associated with the use of a blade.

3. PRK

PRK (photo refractive keratectomy), approved by the FDA in 1995 can be seen as predecessor to LASIK in the world of eye surgery treatments. The procedure involves the use of a laser to reshape the cornea by removing unwanted tissue. PRK is preferred for patients who suffer from eye complications, such as steep or flat corneas and irregular-shaped eyeballs.

4. LASEK

LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is more preferable mode of surgery for the people who have thin or flat corneas as they are at a risk of developing complications from LASIK surgery. It involves use of a tool called trephine in place of a microkeratome blade and patients might take four days to a week to recover.

5. Epi-LASIK

Epi-LASIK combines the procedures applied in LASIK and LASEK. In Epi-LASIK, an oscillating plastic blade is used to create the flap in the cornea. Epi-LASIK is the preferred laser eye surgery for people with low myopia.

6. CK LASIK

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) comes to help for the people suffering from hyperopia and presbyopia and it makes use of radio waves and heat to reshape the cornea.
